History of the Egyptian Geological Museum
The museum was founded in 1904 by eminent geologist and mineralogist Gustave de Smet in response to the upsurge in interest in Egypt's geology, spurred in part by the discovery of several important mineral resources. De Smet laboriously expanded the museum's collection, which today includes more than 30,000 specimens, after seeing the necessity for a centralised depository for these geological riches.
